Social media is part of WashCOG’s push to reach the people
September 2025 — WashCOG is more focused and active on social media as we strive for more effective outreach. The coalition has long been on social media, with several accounts. But we have struggled to keep all accounts active with volunteers.
This summer, we adopted a new approach. WashCOG is now focused on posting on Meta’s platforms, chiefly Facebook and Threads. Meta makes it easy to crosspost on its platforms, an attractive efficiency for our mostly volunteer social media team. Meta’s platforms are also among the most-used platforms, giving WashCOG access to enormous audiences.
Facebook in June 2025 had 3.07 billion monthly active users, making it the largest social media platform at that metric, according to Search Engine Journal. Another Meta platform, Instagram, was third with 2 billion monthly active users, the Journal said. Threads came in ninth with 275 million.
The coalition is now striving to post daily on Facebook and Threads, and we succeed most of the time. Follow us on Facebook at Washington Coalition for Open Government and on Threads at waopengov.
We hope to master short videos in the months ahead and begin posting regularly on Instagram. Our Instagram handle is also waopengov.
The coalition is seeing results from its new approach. Our Facebook page views increased 50% to 17,238 over a 28-day period ending Aug. 17, 2025. Interactions and followers have also increased on Facebook. Meanwhile, on Threads, the coalition now has 524 followers.
Separately, WashCOG member Jamie Nixon is reporting on timely transparency issues in Washington state with “The Public Records Officer Podcast.” His recently launched podcast already has four episodes.
Nixon’s podcast is available on Apple and Spotify. You can also get access to the episodes, with transcripts and source materials, at thepublicrecordsofficer.com.
