AG hears comments on model rules for handling public records
Nov. 11, 2025 — WashCOG was among organizations and individuals who testified Nov. 6 on proposed Model Public Records Act Rules, which would guide agencies in efficiently responding to public records requests. The model rules, introduced Oct. 3, 2025, note that requests are increasing and smaller agencies in particular are sometimes scrambling to keep up. News media and others, however, urge fewer delays and note backlogs in filling records requests.
Among the AG’s suggestions include sorting requests into simple and complex tracks, promptly respond to simple requests for a single, specific record and consider whether a record is likely exempt from disclosure before making third-party notification.
Also testifying were public records officers, attorneys and members of the media. The AG’s office is accepting written comments on the proposed Model PRA Rules through the close of business on Nov. 17, 2025. Written comments should be sent to agorulemaking@atg.wa.gov.
