Dean Miller is the great-grandson of Olympic Peninsula and Little Spokane River homesteaders, one of whom was a Spokane County Clerk. Miller was The Spokesman-Review’s Idaho statehouse reporter from 1986 to 1995 and editor of the Port Townsend Leader in 2019. Prior to that, he was editor of the (Idaho Falls) Post Register for 14 years. He was selected for a Harvard Nieman Fellowship in 2008 and as a Poynter Institute Ethics Fellow in 2006. In 2009, the State University of New York/Stony Brook hired him as Director of the Center for News Literacy, where he served until 2015. Since then, he has worked as Senior Vice President/Content at Connecticut Public Broadcasting, at North Olympic Land Trust as Development Director and at the Seattle Times as Free Press Editor.
Miller is currently a writer and editor at Lead Stories, one of the independent fact-check agencies Facebook et al rely on to correct viral falsehoods.
